Policy Purpose

The Swinburne University of Technology Human Research Ethics Committee (SUHREC) (formerly known as the Human Experimentation Ethics Committee) was established by the Council of Swinburne Limited (as it then was) on 9 June 1987.  It has terms of reference, composition and operating arrangements pertaining to the independent ethical appraisal of research involving humans and as regards compliance with relevant legislation and contractual arrangements entered into by the University. 

 

Issue status

Revised terms of reference, composition and mode of operation approved by Council at its Meeting 5/2005 held on 22 August 2005 (with effect from 10 February 2006).

 

1.

Terms of Reference

 

1.1

To assist the University in its commitment to meeting the highest standards of legal, ethical and professional behaviour with respect to research involving humans, such as to protect the interests of research participants, investigators and the University.

 

1.2

To assist the University in meeting its legislative and contractual obligations with respect to the ethical conduct of research involving humans, including current statements and guidelines promulgated by the National Health & Medical Research Council and other regulatory bodies.

 

1.3

To provide an advisory service to the University as appropriate with respect to the ethical conduct of research involving humans, having due regard to national, international and professional codes of conduct.

 

1.4

To develop, establish or revise working policies and procedures to assist in the performance of its role, including the establishment of regular or ad hoc sub-committees or working parties.

 

1.5

To report annually to Council via the Vice-Chancellor and to make reports to such other internal or external bodies as required.
